Indestructible Happiness

December 9, 2009 by ddunn

A line of research concerning a group of young people called “indestructibles” was once reported in a leading psychological journal.

These indestructibles lived under extreme poverty, and came from very bad home conditions that were located in slum neighborhoods. Yet, they were well-adjusted and good students.

That research got me to thinking of some people I’ve met in my life who fit the description of “indestructibles.”

It is true that we cannot prevent troublesome or sorrowful events from intruding into our lives. But some people live heartily, joyfully and considerately one day at a time. They rely on their power of choice, whether their problems are solved today or not. (Read More)

Building Your Self-Respect

November 6, 2009 by ddunn

There may be days when you are tempted, or even choose, to consciously behave in ways contrary to your knowledge. Then you renew your commitment to your goal and start over again.

If, on a daily basis, you do what is necessary, you are on your way to good physical health. No one else can do these things for you. (Read More)

Dealing with the Irritations of Life

October 24, 2009 by ddunn

Interacting with friends, coworkers, mates, and children will reveal the inner workings of a person. Being irritable can cause bodily aches and pains, tiredness and nervousness. The mind can become weighed down by burdens. Granted, the irritants may be small, vague ones. All a person may say is, “I’m anxious, afraid.” Maybe he can’t tell you any particular thing that is bothering him. But he knows something is, and once in a while one particular sore will fester till it breaks open.

In our society today, millions of people are suffering from chronic worry, hypertension, prejudice, guilt, hatred, fear, and the harassment of failure. Unfortunately, an alarming number of people suffering from these ailments are professing Christians! The person who knows Christ as Savior is not immune to mental or emotional problems. He is as susceptible to tension and anxiety as a non-Christian working beside him at the office or plant or living next door. (Read More)

Deceitful Relationships

October 6, 2009 by ddunn

Everyone interacts with other people in a family, at work, at church, in a store, in a car, in a neighborhood. In the process, you either reveal or conceal what is on your mind.

Many of my clients appear to be radiantly happy when they enter the consulting room, but before the session is over they reveal a bitter, hateful spirit. (Read More)

Spirit-Filled Marriage

September 15, 2009 by ddunn

Have you ever heard these lines? “Oh, to dwell there above with the saints that we love, that would be glory. But to dwell here below with the saints that we know, that’s another story!”

Between now and the time we arrive in heaven, we’ve got some living to do together, don’t we? That’s the other story. Let’s take a look at that story, because it can turn out to be a happy journey. (Read More)

Steps to Contentment

September 6, 2009 by ddunn

Almost everyone who comes to my consulting room has been in pursuit of the advantages of life, but something or someone went wrong. Their contentment and sense of self-worth or self-respect has been shattered. If their self-respect and self-worth is intact, then the loss of contentment is attributed to the behavior of an offending person or to circumstances that have shifted to one’s disadvantage.
